Obituary

Richard Alan Knittel, of Tampa, Florida, passed away on May 21, 2026, at the age of 73.

Richard was born on February 19, 1953, in Queens, New York, to Henry (Hank) and Victoria (Vickie) Knittel. He grew up in Franklin Square, Long Island, with his older brother, Henry (Bud), and sister, Jacqueline (Jackie). He had a happy childhood with a close-knit family that shaped his early years and remained important to him throughout his life.

Richard stayed close to his parents and treasured memories of family gatherings in New York, Connecticut, and Florida.

Richard enjoyed following sports and was a devoted fan of the New York Giants, the Mets, and the Knicks. Always quick to strike up a conversation, Richard enjoyed meeting people, telling jokes and sharing stories. After living and working in Connecticut for most of his adult life, he retired to Florida to be near family. He loved his daily rituals of reading the newspaper, playing solitaire, and family dinners. He is remembered for his sense of humor and his ability to make people laugh.

He was predeceased by his parents, Henry and Victoria Knittel, and by his brother, Henry Thomas (Bud) Knittel, Jr.

Richard is survived by his sister, Jacqueline Okosky (Chuck); his daughters, Casey Sweeney-Knittel (Steve) and Katie Knittel; his grandchildren, his nieces and nephews, Christie, Robin, Marcelle, Gary, Kim, and Kristen; their spouses, and many great-nieces, great-nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

The family is grateful for those who cared for Richard during his final years in Tampa.
