Obituary

Sammy John Castellano (“Nano”), 79, of Lithia, Florida, passed away peacefully at home on Sunday, August 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

A proud second-generation Floridian of Sicilian descent, Sammy was born in Ybor City, Florida, in 1946. His legendary work ethic was forged early, starting at the age of 14 in his family’s auto body shop and wrecker company, Columbia Body Shop, on 7th Avenue. There, he learned to rebuild cars and drive wreckers, beginning a lifetime of mastering any trade he touched.
After graduating from King High School in ‘64, he honed his skills as a plumber before dedicating over 25 years of service as a Multi-Trades Engineer for the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office at the Orient Road and Falkenburg Road Jails where he eventually retired at 71. He was nicknamed “the Eveready Battery” because he had so much energy and was always on the go – even at the age of 79.

Sammy had many passions in life, from rebuilding cars, driving and racing his dirt bikes and adored ’52 Chevy. For over 50 years, he found peace in his weight training in his garage, garden propagating fruit trees, raising his dairy cows, and nurturing his lifelong love for all animals.

Sammy was a man of the highest character. He did not gossip or put up with bullshit. He was not afraid to say his opinion even if it was not taken well. He was a man of his word, and his actions spoke volumes. He enjoyed laughing and playing jokes on his friends and family. His dry sense of humor would often catch you off guard when you didn’t expect it.

If you were fortunate enough to know him, you knew he would do anything for you. No project or problem was too big or small for him to conquer for his family, friends, and neighbors. He was MacGyver. He was our Superman.
Sammy specialized in raising strong, independent women – his daughters and granddaughters. He saw everything as a teaching moment, and we adored learning from him. He taught us to box, work on cars, shoot guns, raise cows, and to not be afraid to get our hands dirty. No matter how busy he was, he always made sure to attend our dance recitals, help train for cross country and track meets, and travel to our Tae Kwon Do competitions. Yet, of all these moments, he cherished painting our nails most. He always made certain we had the prettiest nails! His greatest joy was simply being present with our family watching movies and eating popcorn, playing cards, or loving on the fur babies.

Above all, Sammy was the unwavering patriarch of our strong, close-knit family. He is predeceased by his parents, Joseph Tagliarini Castellano and Angelina Capitano Castellano, his brother, Joseph Jr., and his niece, Donna Castellano Randall.

He is survived by his beloved wife of 56 years, Elaine Noyas Castellano; his two daughters, Lori and Tammy Castellano; his two granddaughters, Sydney and Isabella Castellano Jimenez; his godson and nephew, Joseph Castellano; and his cherished feline companion, Cookie Ann.

Our family will be forever grateful to be blessed with such an incredible man at the center of our universe. Our protector, our supporter, and our best friend, he was always in our corner rooting for each one of us. His profound love and legacy of strength are engraved in our hearts, and we will miss our real-life MacGyver and Superman.

A celebration of Sammy’s life will be held at a future date for family and friends.
